    Born in Edinburgh, the son of an architect and studied at The Trustees Academy 1831-34 moving to London to enter the RSA Schools in 1836. Caw described his work as "dwelling upon the pathos of life". His best known painting "Archbishop Tillotson Administering the Sacrament To Lord William Russell in the Tower" is in The Tate.
