About Alfred Chavannes

  • Biography

Landscape painter Alfred Chavannes was born in Switzerland in 1836. Alfred first studied architecture in Lausanne. Later, he turned to painting and studied under J. Bryner and Alexandre Calame in Geneva.

Alfred then traveled to Düsseldorf, where he worked in the Oswald Achenbach studio for several years. In the middle of the 1870's, Alfred Chavannes returned to Lausanne. He found the subjects for his paintings in the Alpine world, in the western Swiss lakes, and the landscapes in the Lavaux.

Several of his high mountain landscapes are reminiscent of Alexandre Calam's compositions and were exhibited in both Düsseldorf and Berlin in the 1860's and 1870's.

    Alfred Chavannes died in 1894.
