    Alfred Philippe Roll was a pupil of Léon H. Bonnat, H. Joseph Harpignies, and Charles Francis Daubigny. He was a recognized artist under the Third Republic, known for reflecting current social and republican issues in his artwork. Roll was a follower of naturalism, an artistic movement created by Zola and Castigny. He was one of the founders of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts and created numerous sets. Known for his studies of nude women, his work emanates a strange charm and a troubled emotion of the flesh.
