From 1857-62 Wahlberg studied at the Academy in Düsseldorf, where he was among others a pupil of Hans Gude. This was followed by several study trips to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Brussels. For a short time Wahlberg was working in Sweden and in 1866 became member of the Academy Stockholm. After several extended stays in Paris he received the title of deputy professor at the Academy in Stockholm in 1880.
