    Algernon Talmage was an English-born artist who studied under Hubert von Herkomer at the Herkomer School of Art in Bushey and later at the St Ives School in Cornwall. He founded an artists' club in St Ives and tutored Emily Carr. In 1896, Talmage married Cornish artist Gertrude Rowe and established the Cornish School of Landscape, Figure, and Sea Painting in 1900 with fellow artist Albert Julius Olsson. He held his first solo exhibition in London in 1909 and painted "The Founding of Australia," which was displayed at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1937. Talmage was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1902 and served as a war artist on the Western Front in France.
