    Alice Kent Stoddard attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women where she took classes with William Sartain and Elliott Daingerfield and then attended The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) and studied with William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux. While a student at PAFA she won the first Toppan Prize in 1905 and Cresson Travelling Scholarships in 1905, 1906 and 1907.

    She exhibited in over fifty of PAFA’s annual exhibitions and watercolor shows from 1908 through 1964 and won their Mary Smith prize twice; in 1911 for the portrait of her school friend and fellow artist Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones (1885-1968) and again in 1913 for Paper Dolls.
