He painted his first battle paintings during the Italian campaign. In the course of his many trips, he specialized in oriental genre scenes. In the 1860s, he became a member of the association of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Vienna Academy as well as professor of the Academy. The Schönngasse in Vienna is named after him.
