Took up training in the artist colony of Nagybánya from 1902, and followed it up with training at the independent school of Ferenc Szablya-Frischauf from 1905, but carried on to Paris the very same year, where he attended the Julian, and the Delécluse Academies. Upon returning to Hungary he became a student of the Hungarian Aademy of Fine Arts, first in Bertalan Székely's class, and then the class of Károly Ferenczy. He took a study trip through Germany and Italy in 1913. He was a member of the Society of Nagybánya Painters from the beginning, and became its leader in 1927, when he also took over direction of the painting school.
