About Angelo Caroselli

  • Biography

Angelo Caroselli was an Italian artist born in Rome in 1585. He was a self-taught artist whose eclectic style was most strongly influenced by Caravaggio. Caroselli was described by his early biographers as being a connoisseur of the art of the past, and particularly skilled in imitating the works of both his predecessors and contemporaries, from Raphael to Poussin. In some instances, Caroselli copied paintings directly, while in other paintings, he appears to have consciously imitated the styles of artists whose work he had studied, sometimes hiding his initials within the composition. Caroselli died in 1652.
