During his career Stannus executed a number of commissions for the local history department at the Ulster Museum. He exhibited widely with the Royal Scottish Society, the Belfast Fine Art Society and the RHA among others. He also traveled widely and was appointed correspondent for the Illustrated London News while in Mexico in 1866.
