    Antonio Gisbert was a Spanish painter of historical themes, active during the transition from Romanticism to Realism. He studied at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid and later in Rome and Paris. He represents a pictorial trend typical of the second half of the 19th century: the painting of major events related to national history.

    This is what is known as "history painting" or "retrospective realism", which aims to depict events from the country's historical past with the realism and veracity of a chronicler. He was also famous for his portraits, particularly those kept in the Congress of Deputies. He was also director of the Prado Museum between 1868 and 1873, when he moved permanently to Paris.
