    Antonio Giuseppe Santagata was born in Genoa in 1888. He volunteered for the first World War and was seriously injured during an attack on the Sabotino. Santagata became involved in decorating the main Houses of the Mutilated, thanks to his friendship with Carlo Delcroix, president of the National Association of Mutilated and War Invalid. He was a prominent figure in the Italian artistic research between the two wars, with significant public commissions for wall decorations in Rome, Genoa, Palermo, and Milan. His fame in mural painting was solidified with the large fresco "The heroic life of Antonio Locatelli" in the Casa Littoria in Bergamo.
