    Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome in 1593. She was the daughter of Orazio Gentileschi who was a painter later overshadowed by his daughter. Some of the works once attributed to him are now attributed to her.

    When she was twelve years old, her mother, Prudentia Montoni, died in childbirth. Her father harbored no artistic ambition for his only daughter, envisioning a life as a nun for her instead.
    Her first known work, in 1619, Suzanna and the Elders, was completed when she was only seventeen. When she was only eighteen she was raped by her father's friend, Agostino Tassi. Tassi was indicted, held for six months, then released.
