Artur Markowicz was born in 1872 in Podgórze. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków, including with J. Matejko, and then at the Munich Academy and in Paris. He traveled to Italy, Vienna, the Netherlands, Belgium and Jerusalem, where he found themes for his paintings. Markowicz painted mostly with pastels, less often with oil, landscapes, portraits, "Dutch" interiors, and above all genre scenes from Kazimierz, the Jewish district of Krakow. Artur Markowicz's collections of paintings are in the National Museum and the Historical Museum in Kraków and in the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.
