Born in Hamburg Ascan Lutteroth studied in Geneva with Alexandre Calame and then at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf at Oswald Achenbach, whose successor is his work. Thematically and stylistically influential were his numerous trips to Italy - the "southern light" as we feel it to present paintings outright, he took in his north German landscape.


Lutteroth was a member of the Hamburgischer Künstlerverein. He accompanied crown prince Friedrich Wilhelm and crown princess Victoria on several journeys through Europe.
