    Augusta Denk Oelschig was born on June 12, 1918, in Savannah, Georgia. She was the fourth and youngest child of Josephine (Denk) and Carl Henry Oelschig. Educated in Savannah's public schools, where art instruction was part of the curriculum, Oelschig received encouragement from her art teachers, Linda Trogden and Lila Cabaniss.

    She began her college career locally, at the newly opened Armstrong Junior College (now Armstrong Atlantic State University), and took private art lessons with Emma Cheves Wilkins. In 1937, Oelschig graduated with a certificate in liberal arts and transf...
