    Born in France, Auguste Edouart was a silhouettist of human and animal and animal subjects and also painted landscapes. He served in the French army until 1813 and then went to England for study. He exhibited animal portraits at the Royal Academy of London from 1815 to 1816 and earned money by teaching landscape painting, doing animal portraits, and making wigs.

    In 1925, he began making silhouettes, which turned out to be very successful and which he began when he discovered he could make much better silhouettes with scissors than those made by the popular method with machines.
