About Auguste Mambour

  • Biography from Kunsthaus Lempertz

Auguste Mambour lived from 1896 to 1968. The Belgian painter Auguste Mambour studied at the academy in his hometown Liège, where he held a professorship since 1931. An unmistakable, very personal style marks the work of the 1920s and 1930s, influenced by his sojourns in the Congo and his encounters with African art. At the end of the 1920s, his work was particularly influenced by Surrealism. This work is an early typical example of his painterly interpretation of draughtmanship.
