    Ben Osawe (1931-2006) was one of the most accomplished sculptors among Nigeria’s Independence generation of artists. In his youth, he learned wood carving from his father, a sculptor in the court of the oba of Benin. Traveling to England in the mid-1950s, he received formal training at the School of Graphic Art (1956-59) and the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (1960-65).

    On completion of his training, he remained in England, taking part in many exhibitions, including the 1965 Commonwealth Festival Exhibition where he represented Nigeria.
