  • Biography

    After studying in Düsseldorf from 1863, Berndt Lindholm moved to Karlsruhe, Germany in 1865 to study under Hans Gude. After seeing some French landscape paintings at an exhibition in Karlsruhe, he visited Paris in 1867 in connection with the World Exhibition.

    In a letter to his mother after returning to Karlsruhe he wrote (A. Hedvall, Bohuslän i konsten, 1957, p. 161): “I’m so pleased that I’ve been to Paris, and I can really tell you that I have seen art works from the whole world. The French art, which I did not know before, have taught me a lot and will certainly influence my painting from now on”.

    Lindholm found the art tradition in Germany obsolete and decided to complete his studies in Paris where he moved in 1869. ...
