After study trips to South Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Italy he got finally accepted at the Academy in Dresden as a master pupil of Carl Bantzer. Here, he also got to know Peter August Böckstiegel and Conrad Felixmüller, with whom he founded the Gruppe 1917.
