    Bernhard Luginbuhl was born in 1929 in Bern, the son of a butcher. He came into contact at an early age with the crude world of slaughter, which was to shape him throughout his life. From 1945-1948 Luginbuhl completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor in his hometown, and at the same time attended the arts and crafts school and trained himself as an iron sculptor. Through his occasional assistance in setting up various exhibitions in the Bern art gallery, he came into contact with the sculptural work of Julio Gonzáles, Alexander Calder and Eduardo Chillida.
