Born in Detroit, Michigan, Bill Sawczuk earned degrees in mechanical engineering and architecture before pursuing a career in fine art. In 1976, he enrolled at the Rocky Mountain School of Art in Denver. Most of his art education, however, has been "self-taught," gleaning information from art books and magazines, visiting museums and galleries, and simple trial and error while painting and drawing.

As a young man traveling through the Western states on a motorbike, he literally fell in love with the Teton Park - Yellowstone area and has since called Wyoming his home.
