He studied at the private Nanjin Fine Arts School in 1924 and 1925 and later he studied Western painting at Shanghai Arts University.
He went to Belgium to study in 1930, at Ruangweisi (Antwerp's old translation) Royal College of Art. In 1934, he was promoted to teaching at the Belgian Royal Academy of Arts.
