    Bob Stocksdale is recognized as a pioneer of contemporary wood turning. He revitalized the craft with his exquisite bowls, laying a foundation for the aesthetic acceptance of lathe-turned art. Stocksdale taught himself woodworking and lathe-turning at an early age on his father’s farm, and his first lathe was powered by the motor of an old Maytag washing machine. He turned his first bowl during World War II and taught woodwork to other conscientious objectors. Stocksdale's work has been internationally recognized for fine design and workmanship, and he received several prestigious awards during his lifetime.
