    Boris Schatz (1867–1932)

    An important and influential Israeli educator, painter and sculptor, Boris Schatz was born in Varniai, Lithuania and died in Denver, Colorado while on a fundraising trip to the U.S.A. Before immigrating to Jerusalem in 1906, he lived and worked in Warsaw, Poland; Paris, France; Sofia, Bulgaria; and Berlin, Germany. In Jerusalem he was the founder of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Crafts (now the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design) and of the Bezalel Museum which is the forerunner of what is now the Israel Museum the largest cultural institution in the State of Israel.
