About Bruno Joseph Bobak

  • Biography

    He was born in 1923 in Poland, and immigrated with his family to Canada in 1925, studying art with Arthur Lismer and Gordon Webber at the Art Gallery of Toronto (now AGO) between 1933 and 1937, and with Carl Schaefer and Elizabeth Wyn Wood at Central Technical School in Toronto.

    After winning first prize in the Canadian Army Art Exhibition held at the National Gallery of Canada, he was sent overseas in April 1944, becoming the Official War Artist in the Canadian Army. While Bobak was in Europe with the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, he met Molly Lamb who was also an Official War Artist. The two artists would marry and settle in Vancouver.
