    Carl Emil Uphoff was born in Witten, Germany in 1885.

    Uphoff's artistic development dates back to 1907. He was supported by art patron Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen in Westphalia. He had modern art before his eyes in his museum Folkwang, which was founded in 1902.

    At the same time, Uphoff became a member of the "Folkwang-Kreis" in Hagen where he was amicably supported by Christian Rohlfs. Thanks to Osthaus, Uphoff was also able to travel to Paris in 1909 to become a pupil of Henri Matisse.

    But when the play "Wenn sie lieben" (When they love), written by Uphoff, was first performed at the theater in Hagen on 16 October 1910 and caused a theatrical scandal due to its "indecent content", he was forced to leave for Worpswe...
