About Carl Ferdinand Curten

  • Biography

Born in Düsseldorf, the painter Ferdinand Carl Cürten (1892-1945) first attended the School of Applied Arts and then changed to the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His early works were influenced by Rhine Impressionism. He traveled through Europe and North Africa. He was a member of the artist group ‘Das Junge Rheinland’ (1919-1923) and later of the ‘Rheingruppe’ (later Rhine Secession).

Before the Second World War, the artist turned from oil painting towards watercolors. During the era of National Socialism, his works were regarded as ‘degenerate’, and two paintings from the art collection of the city of Düsseldorf were destroyed. The artist died shortly after the war in a military hospital. (cko)
