The diary entry from the evening of June 1 shows that the travel company ferried by boat from the Isle of Wight to Southampton: "When going up the Bay, located on the right half hidden by Linden trees lie the beautiful ruins of Netley Abbay. The shortness of the time prevented to land there, but the telescopes brought us close to see the large gable of the church with the vast empty Gothic windows which looked very picturesque.
