    In his position as personal physician to the Royal Family Carl Gustav Carus escorted from May 22 to August 9, 1844 King Frederick Augustus II. Of Saxony on his journey through England and Scotland. About his experiences Carus wrote a book published in 1846 under the title "England and Scotland" in Berlin. The diary entry from the evening of June 1 shows that the travel company ferried by boat from the Isle of Wight to Southampton: "When going up the Bay, located on the right half hidden by Linden trees lie the beautiful ruins of Netley Abbay.
