Carl Hilgers took drawing classes at the Düsseldorf Academy and later studied under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. He was a member of the artists' association ‘Malkasten’ and undertook numerous travels through Germany as well as to Holland, Belgium and France. After a short stay in Berlin, he returned to Dusseldorf where he was active for the rest of his life.

Hilgers’s extensive and thematically diverse oeuvre includes primarily romantic landscape motifs, including winter landscapes and river scenes in the Dutch tradition. (nlu)...
