    Carl Johann Arnold was born in 1829 in Kassel. German painter, draftsman, illustrator and graphic artist (1829 Kassel to 1916 Jena), Arnold was the son and student of the wallpaper designer, wallpaper manufacturer, landscape and portrait painter, lithographer and decorator Carl Heinrich Arnold (1793-1874). He initially Grew up in Kassel before moving to Berlin from 1830-35. In 1836 Arnold moved back to Kassel. Carl Johann Arnold received early support from his father's friend Adolf von Menzel. Arnold was the only student of Menzel in Berlin for 3 months at his invitation in 1846. Menzel affectionately called him "Carlchen". There was a short interruption of Arnold's studies following the death of Menzel's mother.
