    Carl Schmitz-Pleis trained at the Düsseldorf academy. Schmitz-Pleis was a German painter of landscapes, still-lifes and figurative paintings. In 1907-08 he and fellow artist Walter Hugo Ophey founded the artists' group Künstlervereinigung Niederrhein, which was one of the most progressive movements of the time. In the spring of 1910 the two young artists traveled to Italy, where they were inspired by the Neo-Impressionists.
