Subsequently a pupil in Ludwig Richter's landscape class until 1864, together with Albert Venus among others. Received several awards and medals. Stays with Richter in Dresden-Loschwitz, Bohemia, the Ore Mountains, and the Harz Mountains. 1865-66 Trip to Rome, Olevano, and Civitella, where he met his former classmates Venus and Mohn. Returns to Dresden. 1869 Marriage to the merchant's daughter Marie Plaul.
