He was named after his mother, Carmen. He was born into a large family of four brothers and two sisters who resided at a home on 23rd street in Philadelphia. Carmen was mostly self taught. His brothers, Anthony, and Fred, were also painters. In fact, the children's parents thought Anthony was a better painter, so he was sent to Art school in Philadelphia. Carmen was disappointed at this, but kept on painting. And paint he did. For more than fifty years, he completed well over a thousand oil on canvas works. His brothers, Anthony, and Fred, were also painters. In fact, the children's parents thought Anthony was a better painter, so he was sent to Art school in Philadelphia.
