She was a member of the short-lived Amadlozi Group in the early 1950s and taught at the University of the Witwatersrand through the 1950s and 1960s. Early travels and study in Europe and America had introduced her to international trends of Op and Pop art, which led to experiments with Modernism in provincial South Africa. 1955 through to 1962 the enduring motifs in her work were a series of anthropomorphic birds, which take many forms in her paintings and tapestries.
