Jiang Changyi was born in Xiangxiang, Hunan province. His formal education began at the Nanjing Art College Sub Middle School, and was completed an graduation from the Art Department Nanjing Art College in 1965. Subsequently, he was employed by the Shanghai Art Designing Company as general manager and is now Dean at the Shanghai Painting and Sculpture College as well as a practicing artist. Jiang is president of the China Artists' Community and of the International Advertising Association. Highly reputed for his skills as a watercolorist and oil painter, Jiang has worked on many public commissions.
