    An essentially self-taught painter born in Bruges in 1877 and deceased in Paris in 1974, he moved to Paris in 1905 under the guidance of Flori van Acker and settled in Montmartre permanently in 1907 at 57, rue Philippe de Girard, in a first-floor apartment in what was then a farmhouse. He befriended Kees Van Dongen, who had arrived from Rotterdam, and Utrillo, and also frequently met Monet, Renoir, Degas and Picasso. Verbrugghe remained faithful to Impressionism, and as an immensely talented landscape painter, he painted superb views of Bruges, where he spent the summer, Venice, Naples, Rome and Paris.
