About Charles Lanman

  • Biography

    Charles Lanman was born in 1819 in Monroe, Michigan. He was sent north to his Grandfathers in Washington, D.C. for schooling in 1829. After he left school he worked in New York City. He later worked as a journalist in Michigan, Ohio, and New York City. Lanman ended up in Washington, D.C. where he worked at a number of posts in the federal government.

    An avid outdoorsman Lanman spent his free time exploring the eastern United States, the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence.

    Charles Lanman studied art under Asher B. Durand in New York City. He was made an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1846. His paintings can be found in the collection of the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.
