Chenyang Xu majored in oil painting and graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing University of the Arts in 1992 with a bachelor's degree. Xu went to study abroad in Japan with a scholarship of the MEXT in 1994. The artist studied and researched consecutively in three State universities in Japan including the University of Tsukuba and Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Xu graduated with master's degrees in art and education.
