About Christian Daniel Rauch

  • Biography

Christian Daniel Rauch (1777-1857) was the father of the Berlin school of sculpture, and he counts as the most prominent German sculptor of the 19th century. In 1795, he became assistant of the court to sculptor Ruhl. In 1797, he became groom of the private household of the King in Berlin. In his free time he further trained himself in the arts.

He exhibited for the first time in 1802 the bust ‘Sleeping Endymion’, resulting in the promotion to the Academy of Arts by Queen Louisa of Prussia. Rauch completed his studies at the University of Rome. Back in Berlin, he received almost all commissions for the public statues of the court. Rauch leaves behind a massive sculptural work of art.
