Born in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Clement McAleer studied in England at Canterbury College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. Upon graduating he was given a solo show at the Arts Council Gallery in Belfast, returning again to show there in 1984. In that year art critic Aidan Dunne wrote: "with his resourcefulness, his rootless, restless vision, McAleer is definitely one of the most interesting young artists in Ireland today" (Sunday Press, 22 January 1984).
