About Cristoforo Roncalli

  • Biography

Cristoforo Roncalli was an Italian painter who moved to Siena in 1575 and later to Rome in 1582. He gained commissions from numerous patrician families and was highly regarded by his fellow artists, including Peter Paul Rubens. Roncalli's work was financially successful in Rome, where he was among the highest paid artists of his time. The present painting is most likely an early work by the artist, in which Sienese influences can still be discerned
