Darrel Greene, nee Jesse Darrel Green, grew up in Magrath, Canada and Salt Lake City, Utah. Always a sports and art enthusiast, he was known to have skied Alta before there were lifts and worked decorating windows at ZCMI Department Store.

When he learned he would soon be drafted, he signed up for Navy, maintaining that he’d rather ride than walk. Although he excelled as a pilot and became a flight instructor, he did not even consider becoming a commercial pilot. He said that would have been like being a truck driver.
