Dolores Anita (Dee) Burgess Toscano, a painter and sculptor of Indians and other Western subjects, was born February 19, 1932, in Fort Worth, Texas, growing up there and in Lubbock and Odessa, Texas. She moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1950, then Albuquerque, New Mexico, through 1955, when she married James Toscano and lived in San Diego, California until 1957. She won one of the ubiquitous "Draw Me" contests, but family responsibilities prevented her from completing the correspondence course.
Toscano, part Cherokee on her father's side, has visited the reservations of many tribes, including Apache, Crow, Zuni, Taos and Blackfeet, painting figures, portraits, and ceremonials. Toscano also paints Western landscapes and still-lifes. Since the early 1980s, she has also worked in bronze, including a life-size bronze figure in 1986 of St. Walburga for the Walburga Convent, Boulder, Colorado.
While, in 1985, she briefly studied pastel with Daniel Green, and sculpture with Bruno Lucchesi, Toscano is essentially a self-taught artist. Moving to Denver, Colorado in 1957, Toscano began painting western subjects and commissioned portraits. In the mid-1960s she entered local art competitions in Denver, establishing her career by the 1970s. A frequent prize-winner, Toscano lived in Wheatridge, Colorado, from 1976-1993. She now lives in Lakewood, Colorado.

Dolores Toscano Obituary (1932 - 2018)
Dee died peacefully at home on April 13, 2018. She was born on February 19, 1932, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Homer (Tex) Burgess and Ruth Strickland.
Dee is survived by sons Jimmy and Steven, daughter-In Law Kristen, and granddaughters Isabella, Gianna and Mia. Also surviving Dee are her sisters Anita and Candy; as well as granddaughter Cody and great grandsons Danny and Tim. Dee was preceded in death by her husband James (Jiggs), daughter Kerry, sister Robin and brother Billy.
Dee was a nationally acclaimed Southwest Artist, recognized in Who's Who in American Art, Women Artists of the West, Western Art Digest, and Artists of the Rockies. Dee held hundreds of exhibitions including at the Denver Museum of Natural History, Pastel Society of America, Beijing China Artists, Salon Internationale du Pastel Paris and the Cheyenne and Colorado Governor's Invitational.
She was commissioned for sculptures of Saint Walburga for Walburga Convent in Boulder, CO and of Christ for The Church of the Risen Christ in Denver, CO. Memorial Service will be Friday, April 20, 2018 at 3:30pm at Applewood Baptist Church, 11200 W. 32nd Ave., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred in Dee's name to Mount Saint Vincent, 4159 Lowell Blvd., Denver, CO 80211.

Of her work, Dee Toscano said: "Anticipating the magic that can happen between an artist and his work keeps me motivated. I never get bored, weary perhaps, because I know I'll never be able to create all the visions I've stored in my mind."
She has been featured in articles in the 1980, "Grumbacher Art Magazines";
July 1983, "American Artist"; September 1985, "Southwest Art"; September/October 1986, "Western Art Digest"; and September 1987, "Southwest Art"; and September/October 1991, "Art of the West".
In 1980, she was nominee for: "Women of the Year", Denver, Colorado, and in 1987, was awarded by the Pastel Society of America the status of "Master Pastelist" in New York.
