    Born in Bournemouth on March 4 1924, Deryck Arthur Foster learned to sail around Christchurch when he was a child. He was educated at The King's School, Canterbury, and Bournemouth Technical College, where he studied Commercial Art. During the Second World War he served as a fitter in the RAF, repairing and testing engines in Lancaster bombers before being posted to India, where he worked on Liberators, Vultee Vigilants and Dakotas, and painted all the sets for the base theatre.

    The war over, Foster went to the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and met Denise Chuter, the daughter of a BP executive. They married in 1949,...
