Don Miles was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 21, 1912. In 1918, his family moved to Long Beach California. His schooling was in Long Beach including his first year of college majoring in engineering. It is said that he started painting in 1932 and drawing was his main interest. He dropped out of college and went to a trade school in Los Angeles. In 1933, his first job was in architectural design and lasted six years.
Don's strong interest in painting led him to study landscape painting under Henry Richter and Sam Hyde Harris. He did a lot of plein-air painting in the desert and at the Harbor. He started painting as a serious professional in 1964. He painted in oils and watercolors.
Don became a teacher and taught many fine artists how to compose and create fine art.
Don won more than 90 awards, many "Best in Show" and in 1978 the Grand National of the American Artists Professional League. Don belonged to many organizations including The Businessman's Art Institute of Los Angeles, San Gabriel Fine Art Club, Artists of the South West, American Artists Professional League, Desert Art Center, California Art Club, and the Pasadena Art Association.
Don passed away in 1990 while residing in Pasadena, CA. It was a real loss to the art community.Biography from the Archives of askART
Born in Lincoln, NE on May 21, 1912. Miles settled in Long Beach, CA in 1918. He began painting there in 1932 after attending a meeting of artists who formed the Spectrum Club. He studied locally with Sam Hyde Harris and Henry L. Richter. In the 1980s he taught art to advanced students in the Palm Springs area and was a resident of Pasadena until his demise on Nov. 10, 1990. Working in oil and watercolor, he produced harbor scenes with boats and desert landscapes. Member: Businessmen's Art Inst. of LA (pres. 1970); AAPL; Artists of the SW; Desert Art Center; San Gabriel FA Club; Pasadena AA. Exh: Calif. Art Club, 1932; AAPL, 1978 (1st prize).
