    Donato Frisia was born on August 30, 1883, in Melate, in the province of Como, Italy. He was the son of Costantino Frisia, a builder and decorator influenced by revivalist styles, and Giuseppina Grancini, who came from a wealthy Milanese merchant family. From an early age, Frisia assisted his father on decorative projects, including work at a noble villa in Brianza, where exposure to the painter Eugenio Gola inspired his interest in painting.

    He began his formal training at the Melart School of Painting under R. Brambilla, and in 1905 enrolled at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.
