Wang Dongling was born in Rudong, Jiangsu Province in 1945 and studied at the Nanjing Teacher's College and the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to the United States in 1989 for four years, teaching and exhibiting at various universities and institutions. Since 1998, Wang returned to teach at his Alma Mater in Hangzhou.

Wang received traditional calligraphy training and was an apprentice of renowned calligrapher Lin Sanzhi. He once claimed that "the brush has become an extension of my body. Calligraphy has been my calling, my life, and my aspiration."
