Dorothy Sklar Phillips was born in New York City on April 25, 1906 and died on March 15,1996 in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 90. At the time of her death, she was living with her sister Pearl Sklar Getz and her nephew JohnT.Getz at 9707 Horner Street in Los Angeles. Her primary residence and studio during her career was at 6612 Colgate Avenue in Los Angeles.

Painting subjects of landscapes, figures, and portraits include: treescapes, Chinese or Korean style buildings, Mexican and Guatamala people and landscapes, scenes from California such as old homes in Los Angeles, Echo Park in San Francisco, and Angel's Flight, Utah landscapes including Canyonlands National Park, Bryce Canyon, Shafer's Trail, Zabriski Point, and Arches National Monument, views of Yellowstone National Park, and The Lower Falls in Golden Canyon in Death Valley.

Dorothy Sklar Phillips worked in styles of impressionism, realism, and abstraction and with the mediums of oil and watercolor.

She had memberships in many Art organizations including California Watercolor Society, Laguna Beach Art Association, Women Painters of the West, and Westwood Art Association. She exhibited at the Santa Cruz Art League 1944-1946, the Alabama Watercolor Society 1944, Delgado Museum 1944-1954, California State Fair from 1949 to 1966, California Palace of Fine Arts, 1953-1954, Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1954 and 1955, and Butler Art Institute in 1955.

She attended UCLA in the 1930's with her sister Pearl Getz, and studied with Millard Sheets and Stanton MacDonald Wright at the Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. She also was a teacher at the Santa Monica city schools in art in 1943 -

Awards included recognition from the Laguna Museum of Art,National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic, and Women Painters of the West.

Dorothy was married to Dr. Louis Phillips who passed away years ago in Los Angeles.

Personal note: "My mother, who was Pearl Sklar Getz, was her sister who passed away on December 2. 2001 at the age of 91 years. Dorothy was well loved by her sister Pearl and Henry Getz and Pearl's two sons Neil and John T. Getz. We spent many holidays with her at the home every year."

DOROTHY SKLAR (1906-1996)...Born: New York City, NY.

Dorothy Sklar's family moved to Southern California when she was about four years old. She was raised in the Los Angeles area and attended USC with a major in the education field.

While working as a teacher in Santa Monica during the 1930's, she took instruction in watercolor painting from Millard Sheets and Dong Kingman. By the early 1940's she had quit teaching and was painting and exhibiting in art shows across the country with the California Water Color Society. Most of the time she painted right on location from the inside of her parked car. Old houses and street scenes in the East Los Angeles area were the subjects in many of these works. She was an active member of the board of directors of the California Water Color Society for many years.
